Written by Tom Page

Start the Spring with Detroit Bikes! The Detroit Bikes Spring Training Ride V, Saturday, March 24, 2012, 10 AM start.

Urban bicyclists know that there is no better way to experience our City than on a bicycle. Even better is riding with a group of like-minded folks. Please join Detroit Bikes on our first ride of 2012!

One of my very favourite events of the year is changing my clocks as we spring ahead to Daylight Savings Time! Another fave is the Corktown St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Both these events signal to me that it’s time to finalize the details for our annual Spring Training Ride!

So, put some air in your trusty bicycle’s tires, throw some lube on the chain, dust the cobwebs off the spokes, and get ready to ride! Because, as Arnold would say, “We’re Baaaaaaaaccccckkkkkk!!”

The Fifth Annual Detroit Bikes! Spring Training Ride (STR for short) is a sports themed event in which the riders will cruise past current and past Detroit sports venues, including Comerica Park, Ford Field, Tiger Stadium (RIP), Olympia Stadium (RIP), Recreation Park, Veterans Memorial Park in Hamtramck (former home of the Detroit Stars) and others. Wear something that represents your favorite Detroit City team (professional, college, futbol, high school, CYO, etc.), such as a T-shirt or bandanna and help us welcome the warm weather!

ABOUT PECHA KUCHA:
Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 180 cities across the world. Find a location and join the conversation.

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers, performers and artists to meet, network, and show their work in public.

The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system, each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

March brings St. Patrick’s Day but DSG is focusing on another kind of green to start the month: a sustainable future for Detroit.

ABOUT GREEN GARAGE:

The Green Garage is actually three things: a building located in the Midtown area of Detroit, a business enterprise, and a community of people dedicated to Detroit’s sustainable future. The building dates back to 1920, when it was a showroom for Model T-based automobiles, and is on the National Registry of Historic Places (see building history). It was purchased in 2008 by Tom and Peggy Brennan, who, with a wonderful community of over 200 individuals, have completed a green, historic renovation. The renovation work can be seen on the construction page. Our principal business focus is helping triple bottom line businesses grow naturally.

Detroit Bikes! is a grassroots advocacy project associated with Detroit Synergy, aimed at promoting cycling within the urban city, specifically the “Motor City”.

Our goal is to become a volunteer group that:

Identifies opportunities, existing groups/businesses and special events that promote city cycling.

Educates both young and old of the benefits of cycling as a means of transit, along with understanding proper bike safety and maintenance.

Promotes the potential of a dynamic city of cyclists with activities to create an awareness of biking. Our groups’ actions create the push for cycling infrastructure, and our events benefit those who share the goal of a diverse, and healthy city of transit, recreation and positive energy.

What can one expect from a Detroit Bikes! tour?

Our guests can expect to gain a unique appreciation of Detroit, whether they live in the city, were one time residents, or just lived through stories of the old neighborhood from parents or grandparents. Best of all, Detroit Bikes! and Detroit Synergy gives back positive energy for the city and our group makes all attempts to bring together all interested individuals who want to be involved in the future of Detroit’s city cycling scene, the opportunity to participate and lead by example.

A Detroit Bikes! tour is excellent for those interested in cycling through Detroit’s great historic neighborhoods, or for cyclists whom enjoy seeing Detroit’s destinations at a more personal scale. Our group tour provides an avenue to make the urban lifestyle accessible in one of the most important cities that changed the 20th century. Simply put, a bike tour with Detroit Bikes! can become a history lesson about the “Modernization” of the American Metropolis, while leaving urban explorers with the mode of transit necessary to truly experience a city full of transformation.
