University of Detroit-Mercy Midnight Bike Ride, Friday Night, September 21st-22nd

This Annual Event brings both local cycling Detroiters and University of Detroit Mercy students to explore the 24 hour city of Detroit on bicycles. Participation begins for the 19th Annual Midnight Bike Ride on Friday, September 21st at 10pm, starting from Parking Lot "A," near "the Fountain" and the School of Architecture on the McNichols Campus. Before the night is over, the 30-mile round trip excursion will include such sites as the Palmer Park/Palmer Woods areas, the Detroit City Airport, Downtown Detroit, the Cultural Center, Eastern Market, the Boston - Edison District, and other Detroit destinations. Escorting the students will be the UDM Public Safety Department and the Detroit Police.

The bike tour includes rest stops to point out places of interest and a hot dog break between 12:30-1:00 a.m. at Detroit's famous Lafayette and American Coney Island's. The cyclists should return to campus around 5 a.m. Saturday. RAIN DATE TBA.

For more information, contact either Adam Hollmann of University of Detroit-Mercy Student Life at (313) 993-1154 or Alex of Detroit Bikes! by email at detroitbikes@detroitsynergy.org. Adam will be the media contact on Friday night, but Detroit Bikes! can help with general info.  RAIN DATE TBA.

Help make cycling a tradition by volunteering at these events!

We are looking for the following people for every tour that we organize.  If you know you are going to participate, then why not volunteer?:

  • Bike Mechanic Guru (amaze your friends, and impress your neighbors with your super-human skills of fixing a troubled bike) - always preferred.  If there is a flat tire, or a dislocated chain, its your time to save the day.
  • Tour Guide/Sweeper Squad (a seasoned pro of the urban street scape, or a intermediate level rider with the special skill of keeping the group together, on the route, safe, following all traffic laws, and informed of interesting facts on the tour.) - requires little more than participating in the event itself, and being a good example of proper city cycling.
  • Liability and Legal Waiver Sage (assist with waiver sign-in, and ease the minds of fellow organizers and volunteers) - if you already arrive early to events, all you have to do is sign a printed liability waiver form available from detroitbikes@detroitsynergy.org

If you'd like to help out with any of the activities, please send an email to detroitbikes@detroitsynergy.org, and let us know what special skill you would like to showcase the day of the tour.
