DSG History

It all began with a conversation between friends about the city of Detroit and their desire to experience a vibrant city, here in the "D". Detroit Synergy is the answer to the question "Why don't THEY...." -- the Synergy answer is let's do something ourselves!

The First Meeting

Word about the first Detroit Synergy meeting went out as an email invitation from co-founder, David Naczycz in the spring of 2002:

Greetings,

This mail is to invite you to take part in the creation of a new organization and be a part of making Detroit a great city once more.  The concept of this organization was borne of conversations with former members of the Detroit Leadership Council and discovery of similar organizations in other cities.

The root of the organization lies in the recognized need for a place where people who want to build a great city can come together and through interaction make their ideas stronger.  Read the whole email here.

The First Steering Team

After the first meeting a group formed to develop the ideas and structure of the new organization, Detroit Synergy. These individuals became our first steering team.

The team was responsible for creating the Detroit Synergy logo, outlining our project principles and objectives, and developing the non-traditional, bottom-up structure of the organization. They pulled it all together into our project packet, a document that is designed to guide interested members to develop a project idea and take it to a successful fruition.

Members of the first steering team were David Naczycz, Francis Grunow, Lisa Hickey, Peter Marsh, Elizabeth Neds-Fox, Carolyn Geck, Claire Nelson and Rob Cummings.

Members of the first steering team cut the cake at the DSG 5th Anniversary Meeting.

The Projects

Over the past five years, Detroit Synergy has created hundreds of projects to engage, encourage and education individuals in our region about the city. Check our our projects tab on this website or scroll through the calendar. You'll see everything from a building "hug" to draw attention to potential destruction of historic properties, to dance parties to "illuminate" new building and residential projects. Bike ride tours of places of interest and rides which coordinate with National Bike to Work day and help focus attention on alternative transportation while drawing a thread joining suburbs to city. Forums for discussion on race, "green" initiatives, transit and urban planning. Diverse? Yes, absolutely, but all projects are conceived and driven by individual members of the organization, helping to build leadership skills through involvement. Helping our city become a better place and involving more people in Detroit, one project at a time.

DSG in the News

Over the years we've gotten attention from the press, from brief listings of meetings, to full page newspaper stories, to on-air radio interviews.
